The University of Ghent (Geography Department) bought a UTV (Utility Task Vehicle)

Added on 2016-07-08
The University of Ghent (Geography Department) bought a UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) Kymco 450i to monitor the beach profile at the pilot sites. In a timeframe of one tidal cycle (measurements are carried out during low water) a site measuring 900 m by 1800 m can be monitored using a laserscanner and resulting in a centimeter accurate 3D-point cloud with high resolution.

The total monitoring system mounted on the vehicle contains four components:

Global Navigation Satellite System (Septentrio PolarX) for an accurate positioning by means of satelites

Inertial Navigation System (iXSea Octans 3000) om de positie, oriëntatie en snelheid van het voertuig te bepalen

Laser scanner (Leica HDS 6100) to measure the height of the terrain

A computer to perform analyses with real-time data and which holds the needed storage capacity.

Mounted on the vehicle the set-up looks like this:

Each year 12 monitoring days will be executed divided amongst the two pilot sites Mariakerke and West-Groenendijk, of which 2 monitoring days (1 per location) before and 2 monitoring days (1 per location)  after a storm.
